The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Course provides the minimum requirements for anyone wishing to become a learn to swim instructor (for ages 4+). After completion of the course and your industry onboarding, you will have the opportunity to apply for a RLS SA Swim Teacher Licence as outlined in the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO).

It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling‚ bending over‚ crouching‚ standing, leaning, sitting, pushing, lifting weights, swimming 100m continuously and treading water for 1 minute, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity.

Participants must be a minimum age of 16 years old to complete this course.

Upon successful course completion, participants will be issued a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the SISSS00132 skill set ‘Swimming and Water Safety Teacher’.

  • When applying for a Swim Teacher Licence, the applicant must hold a current HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate. This certificate must be renewed annually to maintain a current licence.

    A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) is also required to undertake your practical training hours at an aquatic facility, as well as for your Swim Teacher License application. Please visit the SA Government website here for more information.

    A reasonable level of English is required to be able to complete this course successfully.

    You must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or hold a valid visa which allows you to enrol in our VET training courses.

    Please be aware that Royal Life Saving Society Australia South Australia Branch Inc (RTO 0996) is not registered as a CRICOS provider. We can only accept international students who hold Student Visa (Subclass 500) if the 8201 condition (maximum 3 months of study) is listed on the visa document.

    At time of enrolment, participants are required to provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) for authentication purposes by Royal Life Saving SA. A USI serves as a unique reference number mandated by the Commonwealth statutory office under the Student Identifiers Act 2014, and it can be obtained from the USI Registrar at www.usi.gov.au.
